Love Keeps it Simple

I was recently asked to travel to Florida for a business trip. To be honest, I really did not want to go on the trip. I wanted to stay home and spend time with my wife, work on our church’s fall festival, and get some stuff done around the house. But God had a different plan in mind. As I was traveling on the plane, I decided to take my Bible and do some studying. I was preparing for my sermon this Sunday in Mark 12. I was reading how Jesus told the Pharisees that all the laws could be summed up in 2 commands: Love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength and love your neighbor as yourself. What I love about Jesus is that He keeps it simple. Often in our lives, we love to over complicate things. I was starting to do the same thing myself. I was so worried about what I was going to accomplish on the trip, all the work projects I needed to finish, and yet I missed the very simple reality that God had a plan for my trip. Once I got off the plane it hit me like a ton of bricks. I ordered my Uber ride and soon I was in the car and on my way to our building. As I was riding in the back seat, a very nice man started up a conversation with me. He started to tell me about his wife who was a nurse. I told him how ironic because my wife was as well. Then he told me about his 4 beautiful children and the home they have right outside of Miami. The last part of what he said is what took the conversation in a different direction. He shared the fact that he had just lost his job and that is why he was driving for Uber. He also told me that he had just started up a new church and was recently a pastor. I laughed because I couldn’t believe God. I told the driver that I was too just recently called to be a pastor. We both just sat in amazement for about 2-3 minutes in awe of what God had done. He had brought to strangers together from thousands of miles apart to share this moment. I got to pray for my friend and bless him and his new church with a small love offering. I realized in that moment that was the entire purpose for my trip to Florida. You see love keeps it simple. Be present. Show love.
